Radio frequency skin tightening has become a very popular treatment at Laser Rejuvenation by Cherie at ACA! Because of this, we get a lot of questions about both the treatment itself and related matters. One concern people express is how to get the maximum results from radio frequency skin tightening when other treatments are being done in conjunction with the radio frequency therapy, such as our Question of the Week. The patient asks, “How long should I wait between having a filler and getting radio frequency skin tightening?”
As with so many other things, the short, simple answer is, “It depends.” The longer, more accurate answer is, “We usually recommend patients wait one to two weeks after having the filler before undergoing radio frequency treatments, with a few caveats.”
Radio frequency treatments heat the lower layers of the skin to stimulate collagen growth, promoting skin elasticity and making it appear more youthful and supple. Fillers and paralytic agents such as Botox help to increase the longevity of treatments by relaxing the muscles in the area, helping reduce or eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. When these treatments are combined, the results tend to be better for many patients.
The reason we suggest having fillers or Botox done first and then using the radio frequency treatments later is because the heat generated in the underlying skin tissue may lead to displacement of the filler. This can mitigate the filler’s effectiveness or eliminate it altogether, which is obviously not the outcome we or our patients want!
To prevent this, we recommend waiting at least one week after fillers are placed, and two is generally better. Doing it this way gives the filler time to achieve maximum benefit for the patient before the radio frequency treatments, while minimizing the risk of the effects being compromised.
Every patient, every skin type and every body is just a little bit different, and so there is no “one-size-fits-all” blanket statement which works for everyone in every situation. At Laser Rejuvenation by Cherie at ACA, we give every patient a thorough in-person clinical consultation and evaluation to understand the patient’s needs, current status and ideal outcome. Then we work with the patient to develop a treatment protocol which offers the best possible chance for achieving their intended goals while minimizing the risk of side effects or post-treatment complications.
As with any other cosmetic treatment, patients should always practice good self-care before and after treatment. This includes following any pre-treatment and post-procedural care instructions issued by the clinical staff; avoiding sunlight and environmental irritants; refraining from habitual behaviors such as drinking and smoking; and other instructions as appropriate to the patient’s situation. Following good self-care practices, such as hydration, a healthy diet and exercise, can help increase the treatments’ efficacy further in some cases, helping to deliver the youthful, radiant look you’ve always wanted!
